It's Major Lazer Monday! Peace is the Mission, the third album from Diplo's alter-ego dropped today and it's a polarizing one. Rob Garratt at The National calls it "schizophrenic, scattershot" while The Guardian's Killian Fox deems it "sharply focused". Divergent critical reception aside, the people have spoken: "Be Together", featuring Natalie Bergman's crackly vocals has already shot to the top of the Hype Machine chart, while "Lean On", with MØ (Danish Sporty Spice reincarnate) has spawned an impressive brood of reworks. Peace is the Mission may not have the tenacity of the group's genre-shattering debut, but it still has all the makings of an epic party:
- Excellent guest list (MØ, Travi$ Scott, Elliphant, Ellie Goulding, 2 Chainz) - CHECK
- Dubby/trappy blend of dancehall + moombahton - CHECK
- Soul-thumping bass, sirens, and a few glorious, chill moments - CHECK
Gripe all you want that "Lean On" is no "Get Free" or that Ariana Grande has no business being at this fête, but there's no arguing with a formula that works. Major Lazer occupies a very special place in my heart, so I'm just grateful this arrived in time for another fleeting summer.
